Reggie
Reggie made fantastic progress in his reading throughout his Seeing Stars instruction. His phonemic awareness increased two and a half grade levels, which supported his three and a half year increase in word attack. Though he could not accurately decode a simple word like tufty when he was initially assessed, he could read four syllable words on his reassessment! His symbol imagery, which grew by three years, similarly laid a foundation for his one year increase in sight word recognition. Simple words like “read” or “what” were not in his sight word base initially, but after instruction he could read words like “important” and “prompting.” These areas of growth, along with his vocabulary, allow him to more easily and quickly read passages at grade level. Reggie has returned to the classroom with increased confidence.
Charles
Over the course of his Seeing Stars Instruction, Charles made significant gains in his reading and comprehension. His ability to sound out words increased by over five grade levels, and his word recognition jumped over three grade levels. This gains were supported by his more than three years of growth in phonemic awareness, which enables him to process the number and sequence of sounds within words, and his ten years of growth in symbol imagery, which allows him to picture letters in his mind to support word recognition. His vocabulary increased by a year and a half. All of these processes allowed him to make a year and a half of growth in his reading accuracy. This increased accuracy and speed of reading also allowed Charles to understand what he reads more easily. His reading comprehension went from a 2.7 grade level to an 8.0 grade level at the end of instruction. He is now interacting with grade level reading at school and is reading daily for fun.
